Outlook?for?research?Creating?new?plants?based?on?knowledge?of?basic?plant?science?in?order?to?contribute?to?the?development?of?a?sustainable?societyOutlook?for?research?Learning?from?the?environment?through?environmental?analysis?and?developing?new?environmental?purification?methods?using?materials?creating?by?living?organisms49応用生物科学科OutlookforstudentsaftergraduationOutlookforstudentsaftergraduationIinvestigatethemolecularmechanismsbymeansofwhichplantsprotectthemselvesfromsalinitystress(high‐saltenvironments)usingtheexperimentalmethodsofmolecularbiology,moleculargenetics,andplantphysiology.Ihopetodevelopinnovativetechnologytogeneratesalt‐resistantcropsinordertoincreaseagriculturalyieldsinsalt‐affectedareas.Iexpectthatmylab’sresearchcouldbecomeanimportantelementinavoidingfoodandenergyshortagesthatareexpectedinthenearfutureifwecanapplyknowledgeobtainedfrombasicplantsciencetobreedsalt‐tolerantplants.Manyofthestudentsinmylabchoosetopursuecareerswithcompanieswhoseworkinvolvesplants.Graduatesalsotendtobeinterestedinworkingforcompaniesthatdevelopdistinctiveenvironmentaltechnologiesorinbecomingteachers.ProfessorTomoakiHorieProfessorHorietookhiscurrentpositionin2010afterworkingasaresearcherattheUniversityofCalifornia,SanDiego,andasanassistantprofessoronspecialcontractwiththeInstituteofPlantScienceandResourcesatOkayamaUniversity,andthenasanassociateprofessoratShinshuUniversity.Hisresearchcentersonthebasicmolecularphysiologyofplantsandplantgeneticandcellularengineeringbasedonit.MylabfocusesonriceandplantsinthegeniusArabidopsisformolecularphysiologicalstudiesusingwild‐typeandNa+transporter‐mutantplants.Thepictureshowsanexampleofahydroponiccultureofriceplants.WeanalyzethetargetNa+transporterthatisessentialforplantsalttoleranceintheoocyteexpressionsystemofXenopuslaevis.WeareattemptingtoproducemutagenizedNa+transporters,whichweexpecttoincreasethesalttoleranceofthehostplants.Iamcarryingoutresearchinawiderangeofdomainsrelatedtoenvironmentalcontamination,fromenvironmentalanalysisandtoxicologicaltestingtothedevelopmentofenvironmentalpurificationmethods.Thiseffortincludesnumerousactivities,forexampleanalyzinglitterandsearchingincavesformicroorganismsthatmightbeusefulinenvironmentalpurification.Inrecentyears,mylabhasbeenfocusingonthedevelopmentofenvironmentalpurificationmethodsthatusematerialsproducedbylivingthings.Ibelievethatunderstandingthestateofenvironmentalcontaminationwhiledevelopingpurificationmethodsisessentialforthefutureofhumanity.Throughenvironmentalanalysisandresearchonpurification,Ihopetoobtainresultsthatproveusefulinaddressingnumerousenvironmentalproblems.Icarryouteducationandresearchtotrainstudentstobecomeleadersinthenextgenerationofenvironmentalresearchandmeasures.Graduatesareemployedaspublicofficialsandbycompaniesengagedinenvironmentalanalysisandinspection.ProfessorHiroshiMoriwakiProfessorMoriwakitookhiscurrentpositionin2015afterworkingasaresearcherattheOsakaCityInstituteofPublicHealthandEnvironmentalSciencesandasanassociateprofessoratFacultyofTextileScienceandTechnologyatShinshuUniversity.Hisareasofresearchincludeenvironmentalchemistryandanalyticalchemistrywithafocusonthedevelopmentofenvironmentalpurificationandanalysismethodsaswellasenvironmentalmonitoring.Throughouttheworld,countlesschildrencontractcommunicablediseasesbecausetheydonothaveaccesstosafewater.Inthisway,purificationisanextremelyimportantresearchtopic.WeanalyzedmudfromthemoatofOsakaCastletorecreate350yearsinthehistoryoftheatmosphericenvironment.Theaerialbombingduringthewarcausedthegreatestdamagetotheenvironment.Department?of?Applied?BiologyDepartment?of?Applied?BiologyWild?type?hkt1;1mutant?
