Three new Next-Generation Research Centers were established in October 2021.Shindai Crystal? is a generic term for a highly functional type of inorganic crystalline material grown using the flux method. Under the leadership of Distinguished Professor Katsuya Teshima, the director of the Research Initiative for Supra-Materials(RISM) and the Shindai Crystal Lab, Shindai Crystal? is at the core of the ongoing development of solutions to water-supply issues around the world. The Lab has developed an adsorbent using Shindai Crystal? to remove fluoride ions from drinking water in Tanzania and conducted on-site verification tests. Their aim is to deliver a safe and secure water supply in developing countries. In Japan, the aqua spots “swee”(Shinshu Water for Ecology and Environment) have been set up at many locations in Nagano Prefecture to encourage people to drink more local tap water and use their own reusable bottles, with the aim of reducing plastic-bottle waste and CO2 emissions. The swee aqua spots can be found on Shinshu University’s campuses, and at various locations such as airports, public facilities, and hotels throughtout Nagano Prefecture. The team swee has been tasked with organizing events and engaging in other activities that will raise environmental awareness and lead to changes in people’s behavior. In recognition of these activities, the Shindai Crystal Lab won an Excellence Prize at the FY2022 “STI for SDGs” Award, hosted by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).TOPICSWhat’s Special about Our Research?
